Highway Named After Ohlone People

A 5-mile section of Highway 129 near Watsonville was named the Ohlone Kallentaruk Highway on Wednesday, Rep. Luis Alejo announced.

It's the first state highway named in honor of the original native people of the Monterey Bay Region.

Kallentaruk means "Home by the Sea", the original name for Watsonville by the Ohlone Indians, according to Alejo.

There was a ceremony Wednesday afternoon in Watsonville.
