Major Earthquake Shakes Mexico, Things Quiet in Watsonville

Earthquakes are a way of life for those living on or near a fault. Preparedness is key.

A 7.6 then revised to a 7.4 magnitude earthquake rattled Oaxaca, Mexico on Tuesday morning, a reminder of the potential damage from a temblor.

The aftershock measured 5.1 magnitude within the following hours of the bigger quake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, there were 22,289 earthquakes worldwide in 2011, of which about only 20 measured above a 7.0 magnitude.
