Major Earthquake Shakes Mexico, Things Quiet in Watsonville

A 7.6 then revised to a 7.4 magnitude earthquake rattled Oaxaca, Mexico on Tuesday morning, a reminder of the potential damage from a temblor.

The aftershock measured 5.1 magnitude within the following hours of the bigger quake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, there were 22,289 earthquakes worldwide in 2011, of which about only 20 measured above a 7.0 magnitude.

In 2011, there were reported 5,237 earthquakes in the United States. Only one was above a 7.0 magnitude. This year, we are up to 694.

In Watsonville and the rest of Santa Cruz County, things have been quiet over the last week, with only a few quakes.
