Patriotism Take Center Stage

Scores of veterans and Watsonville residents turned out for the 'Walk of Honor' and Veterans Day ceremony Friday.

A parade, Watsonville City Band performance and crowd gathered showered veterans with appreciation Friday in Watsonville.

"The meaning of Veterans Day has always been about soldiers," U.S. Marine Sgt. Tood McFarren said, addressing the crowd gathered at the on Friday. "... We make Veterans Day relevant by supporting our troops."

The annual celebration of those who served drew hundreds of people of all ages: veterans dressed in fatigues joined Watsonville police cadets and families at the festive event.

"Welcome veterans. This is your day," said County Supervisor Greg Caput, a former Army lietenant.

State Rep. Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville, honored Korean War veteran Bob Hurley as one of four nominated for Veteran of the Year in the 28th Assembly District.

Hurley, a Watsonville resident, had a 18-year Marine career. Alejo awarded him a plaque, a California state flag that flew over the Capitol, a pin and a license plate frame.

"It's a pleasure and an honor," Hurley said of the award.

He said he thinks soldiers now are sacrificing more than he's ever seen before, "so we should give them our support."
