POLL How long should you be able to park in downtown lots?

The Watsonville City Council will consider dropping the parking time in one popular downtown lot Tuesday, though no one seems supportive of the proposal.

City leaders will again consider halving the parking time allowed in a popular city lot, reducing the two-hour time limit at Lot 14 down to one hour.

That lot is on Rodriguez and Second streets, just off Main Street. It's used by people heading to the courthouse and library, Adult School students and customers of nearby restaurants, shops and beauty salons.

Between the public comment at the city council meeting two weeks ago—when the parking issue first arose—and remarks heard around downtown, no one appears to back the reduction in hours.

Most said two hours was a perfectly fine amount of time to park there. Several people said they've gotten pricey parking tickets for overstaying their welcome in the lot and one business owner said she'd like her own personal spot.

City officials would like more motorists to park in the city-owned garage within the Civic Plaza. The six-story structure is free for two hours or $5 for a daily pass.
