Stamp Out Hunger Steps It Up

Postal carriers food drive breaks record this year.

Letter carriers had full mail trucks last weekend, and it wasn't due to junk mail or holiday packages.

County residents opened their pantries for the annual . They donated 20 percent more nonperishable food items than in 2010, the previous high-water mark, according to Second Harvest Food Bank.

The food bank received more than 40,000 pounds of food thanks to the one-day effort.

Donations—left in paper bags next to mailboxes—decreased in Aptos and Watsonville, while there were substantial increases in Santa Cruz.
