What Can One Man Do? Surfer's YouTube Video Gets Action at City Hall

Santa Cruz Surf School owner Dylan Greiner was disgusted with what he saw in the caves at Collin's Cove by Cowell's Beach. He reported it to the city, but nada. Then, he put it on YouTube and posted it to groups such as Take Back Santa Cruz a

This short, powerful video by Santa Cruz Surf School owner Dylan Greiner caused an uproar among Santa Cruz residents and shows the power of social media.

If they won't listen to one person, they certainly will when thousands see it.

In the video, Greiner says he notified the city a month ago, but nothing got done. But when he put it on YouTube, here's what happened:

From SC Mayor Don Lane...

"Though the city "offices" are closed today, last night I shared the video with our Parks Director and she activated a crew to follow up. First thing this morning a team of parks workers including the Parks Superintendent cleaned the area and finished about 9:15 am - following up on the GREAT WORK DONE YESTERDAY BY VOLUNTEERS. City staff is now working on a plan for how to block off the cave area below the cliff.

"Thanks to Dylan and others who mobilized a quick response."

Almost 50 years ago I went through constitutional swear-in with Parks & Rec, and cleaned up the same areas. All we had to clean up were cigarette butts and beer bottles. These days it is needles, used condoms, empty food cans, fast food wraps, fire pits, and - and- and... Now; I joined TBSC and cleaned up Almar- human animals just trash up elsewhere. Then we clean up Evergreen- just trash up elsewhere. Then we clean up Lighthouse Field- just trash elsewhere. City closed cliff caves near Natural Bridges! Parks & rec cleaned up the levee! YAY! I finally got to enjoy the art businesses bypassing the bum barn by going on the levee. Just plain ridiculous that this goes on and on and on... Summer is over so we are not hurting tourists feelings explaining the {unsafe water} signs we have gotten so used to. At this time of year I hope this gets passed on a LOT! Many thanks Dylan.

I was pleased to see this video and expose' of what is happening in that area of the beach. I met a friend from out of town last week in the parking lot adjacent to the bathrooms at Cowell's Beach and was disturbed by the amount of people who looked to be high or somewhat threatening in that area. My friend was afraid to get out of her car with her grandchildren because of the unseemly nature of the crowd gathered there. I was uncomfortable myself. Thank you, Dylan, for bringing all of this to the attention of many people who care about the beach, the ocean and Santa Cruz, in general.

I am disgusted by the homeless and so called 'campers'. We, as a family and we as citizens of this city, put a lot of money and effort towards shelters and programs for the homeless. Get them off the beaches and parks and into homes, programs for drug abuse and shelters. Thank you to Dylan for bringing this to everyone's attention.
