City Begins Safe Routes to School Project

Safe Routes to School Project Begins

The Safe Routes to School Project began on October 9th and should be completed by November 29th by the Diamond D Concrete Company.

Two locations were identified by City staff for this project. The first location is the North end of Holm Road and the second location is the intersection of Palm and Hill Avenues.

One hundred fifty (150) linear feet of new concrete sidewalk will be installed from 195 Holm Road north to an existing concrete sidewalk.

The second location, Palm and Hill Avenues will have the installation of new wheelchair ramps, sidewalks, driveways, bollards and landscaping to condense the intersection slowing down vehicular traffic to achieve a safer pedestrian travel way.

State of California Grant funds for Safe Routes to Schools will be used to complete this project.

What is Safe Routes to School?

Safe Routes to School is a national and international movement to create safe, convenient, and fun opportunities for children to bicycle and walk to and from schools. The program has been designed to reverse the decline in children walking and bicycling to schools. Safe Routes to School can also play a critical role in reversing the alarming nationwide trend toward childhood obesity and inactivity.

The purpose of the Federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program is to address these issues head on. At its heart, the SRTS Program empowers communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe and routine activity once again. The Program makes funding available for a wide variety of programs and projects, from building safer street crossings to establishing programs that encourage children and their parents to walk and bicycle safely to school.
