Some of the past participants have included City staff, Watsonville High School students from the MESA (Mathematics Engineering & Science Achievement) Club, children from the City's Science Workshop and members of the public. Contestants are to provide a package that can hold a raw egg and prevent it from breaking when dropped from the 6th floor of the parking garage at the Civic Plaza Building.

The City hosts the Egg Drop Contest to celebrate National Engineers Week which in 2014 is February 16-22. Engineers Week was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers and is sponsored by more than 100 engineering, scientific and education societies, and major corporations throughout the United States. The event is dedicated to increasing public awareness and appreciation of engineers and to encourage pre-college interest in science, technology and engineering!
