New School Community Day School is celebrating its 20-year strong history of saving and serving Watsonville's at-risk students.
New School Community Day School was founded in 1994 to keep displaced high school students off the streets of Watsonville. Students typically come to New School with truancy issues, credit deficits, disciplinary records or with stipulations of their probation to attend.
Today, New School serves nearly 100 students per year, including 8th graders, (a population added during the 2013- 2014 school year).
School founder, Don Eggleston, spoke at the 20th Anniversary ceremony Wednesday, about the California's Community Day School principles with a focus on the development of pro-social skills, student self-esteem and resiliency.
Earlier this month, New School Principal, Victoria Sorensen, was recognized by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), as being the Continuation/Educational Options Administrator of the Year for Region 10.
Last year New School earned accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, becoming one of only 27 Community Day Schools in California to achieve this status.
