Pages Turn at Read-a-Thon

Bradley Elementary students and families gather for literacy night.

Bradley Elementary School students and their families gathered Wednesday evening to celebrate Family Literacy Night—the end of the school's read-a-thon—with a book sale and lots of reading-friendly activities.

The "spirit raiser," as library media tech Terri De La Torre called it, was put on by the Corralitos school's enrichment council to encourage students to read. Kids spent the day with their noses in books, trying to read—and enjoy—the most pages. The class that read the most won a party, De La Torre said.

The reading day concluded with the literacy night, featuring a book sale to benefit art programs in the second grade, activities like bookmark-making and a book signing by local children's authors.

"This is a big turnout, so we're really happy," De La Torre said, survey the gymnasium filled with kids and books. "They're just so excited to be reading."
