Help Stamp Out Hunger with Postal Workers on Saturday May 12th

Participate in nation's largest single-day food drive. Leave a bag of non-perishable foods next to your mailbox prior to the time of mail delivery on May 12th to be picked up by your postal worker.

Second Harvest is joining forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to help Stamp Out Hunger in Santa Cruz County.  Now in its 20th year, the annual food drive is a nationwide effort that provides assistance to millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table. In 2011, 70.2 million pounds of food were raised!

You can help by leaving a sturdy bag of non-perishable foods next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 12th. Canned soups and stews, vegetables, protein such as tuna and peanut butter, pasta, beans, rice and cereal are good items to include.

Local letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and econd Harvest will distribute the food through our network of 200 agencies and programs across Santa Cruz County.

“In 2011 our county alone raised over 42,000 pounds of food during Stamp Out Hunger and we’re asking everyone to pitch in to make this year an even greater success,” said Danny Keith, Chief Development & Technology Officer of Second Harvest Food Bank.

The need for food assistance continues to exist in every community in America. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual study measuring food security in the United States, the number of Americans living in food insecure homes reached nearly 49 million in 2011. Perhaps most alarming is the fact that more than 16 million children in America—more than one in five—are faced with the prospect of hunger. Here in Santa Cruz County the number is one in four.

I called the number on the flyer and a woman answered "Mayor Dodge's office". I left aRead More message saying that I didn't appreciate the flyers Dodge was leaving on my porch since I have a NO on T. You know that Dodge is Chairman of LAFCO. The goals of LAFCO as stated on their web page are "to guide urban development away from prime agricultural lands and open space resources". I guess I will have to go to the next meeting and question why Dodge is trying to develop urban sprawl on prime agricultural land when it goes against the goals of the organization he is chairing. I think it's a conflict of interest for him to be chair while he is trying to pass Measure T. I worry that he will pressure the other members to vote for T (if it passes in Watsonville and has to go before LAFCO).

Cathy, have you called the number on your flier to verify that it is in fact her home number and notRead More simply the 'office voicemail'?
Sylvia Lazo May 24, 2013 at 06:34 pm
IF we are indeed talking about the same flier, the only difference being the colors and/or the facesRead More of the city councilperson, this flier was not handed out in defense of Daniel Dodge, and not in defense of Measure T, nor was it from him. Mine was given to me at around 2:30 today by one of 2 women who were walking the neighborhoods handing them out. How do I know they were walking the neighborhoods handing them out? 1- I watched them, and 2-The woman who handed me mine said so.

I used my yes on T flier to line the birdcage. It pissed my parrot off so much, he bit me!

We got one too sweetcakes (some caring person actually tucked it into my door handle so it wouldn'tRead More blow away) even though I have a "No on T" sign in my yard. The "Yes on T" is all lies anyway so it went right into my recycle bin. Perhaps it was just coincidence but they came while we were at the City Council meeting last night. Go figure.
