ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Watsonville High Boys Basketball Player Ivo Basor

The 6-foot-8 Wildcatz post player has racked up 21 double-doubles in 22 games this season.

Career Highlight: “Two weeks ago, we beat Monterey High by five points,” Basor said. “Last year, we lost to them by 40 points. That win really showed how far we’ve come.”

Go-to Move: “I like to post up down low and use my drop step or a jump hook,” Basor said. “ I just try to always use my body and get in good position to help my team.”

Mac or PC?  “Mac. The commercials are cool,” Basor said.

College Plans: “Hopefully I can get a scholarship from a Division I or Division II school,” Basor said. “My dream landing spot would be UCLA.”

Favorite Activity off the Court:  I like hanging out with my friends,” Basor said. “Our team is really close. It’s a lot of fun to be a part of. We hang out together a lot off the court.”

Favorite TV Show: Sportscenter.

Best Game: “We played Monterey at home this year and I had 29 points and 26 rebounds,” Basor said. “We won the game by 15. I didn’t really think I had that many rebounds. I just try and get every board. You can’t really think about it during a game.”

Teammate(s) You’ll Never Forget: “Lamar Cowens, he’s also a junior with me,” Basor said. “We’ve played a lot of games together. This year’s team is special.”

The final two questions of the interview were directed to Watsonville High boys basketball coach Mike Blum.

Best Skill: “Tenacity, and his willingness to work and keep learning,” Blum said. “He uses his body very well. He’s gotten a lot faster, stronger and his ability to work has gone right along with that.”

Lasting Memory: “I named him a captain this year as a junior,” Blum said. “That’s extremely difficult for a junior to take on such an important role like that. ... One day this year we weren’t practicing like I wanted and I walked out of practice. I heard later on that Ivo gave his teammates an earful. He told them that we would have to work a lot harder if we wanted to keep improving. That made me very proud to see him step into a leadership role like that.”
