Aztecas Win Big Against the Law In Soccer Tournament

The Aztecas easily sweep both games against local authorities in a friendly soccer tournament at Ramsay Park on Sunday.

A lively crowd of over 50 family members and friends filled the bleacher seats inside the Soccer Central indoor facility at Ramsay Park in Watsonville on Sunday to watch the annual charity soccer tournament.

This year the Aztecas, led by founder and head coach Gina Castañeda, swept both games of the tournament in dominate fashion against the Probation Team and a team full of police officers from Watsonville as well as other local departments.

But before the tournament’s first kick off, Mayor Eduardo Montesino gave the crowd and the participants a speech along with a bunch of "thank you" acknowledgments to those who helped make Sunday’s event possible.

In the first game, the Aztecas first team took control right from the get go against the Probation Team with three quick goals by the 15 minute mark to make it 3-0. Then just before halftime, the Aztecas scored four more to make it a 7-0 lead.

Down by eight, the Probation Team finally scored a goal to avoid the shutout. But it was too much from the Aztecas as they poured on six more goals to make it a 14-2 crushing victory over their opponents.

In between the games a pair of scholarships for $1,000 from the Lions Club was handed out to Watsonville High graduate Yoni Hernandez, 18, and North Monterey County High graduate Jorge Zamora. Hernandez plans to attend Cabrillo College this upcoming fall semester but is unsure if he will play for the soccer team.

The second and last game between the Aztecas second team and the police squad was a little closer as both teams played with an intense competitiveness that was fit for the once a year matchup.

The Aztecas kept attacking the net with direct shots on goal in the beginning of the game but the goalkeeper for the boys in blue (or in Sunday’s case white) made several spectacular saves to prevent an early deficit.

However, small mistakes from the Police Team allowed the Aztecas to score first to give them an early 1-0 lead. Moments later, they scored again to make it 2-0 right before the half.

The police squad kept it within two goals for a bit after halftime but the game slowly started to slip away from them when the Aztecas showed no mercy and dropped in three more goals to make it 5-0.

With the time winding down and trying to conserve a shutout against their opponents, the Aztecas failed to do so and gave up a goal to the police team to make it a 5-1 game. But it was too little and too late for catch-up at that point and the Aztecas easily win 6-2.
