BOYS BASKETBALL: Watsonville Bounces Gunn in CCS Second Round Playoff Matchup

Wildcatz move on to Saturday's quarterfinal round behind another monster effort from Basor.

Watsonville 64, Gunn 61

The Watsonville High boys basketball team shook off a few raindrops and some early nerves Thursday night at Gunn High in Palo Alto.

Bouncing back from a double digit hole in the first quarter, Watsonville rebounded and survived its Central Coast Section Division I Boys Basketball Playoff game against Gunn High, defeating the hosts 64-61 in a thrilling second round matchup.

Fellow Titans senior Jack Hannan chipped in 20 points and senior guard Taylor Perricone added 4 points.

Gunn, the No. 8 seed in the Division I bracket, opened up the game on fire.

Scores from Redfield, senior Anthony Cannon, Hannan and Perricone lifted the Titans to an 11-0 lead in the opening quarter.

The Titans landed the first blow, but the No. 9 seed Wildcatz, a 70-58 winner over Wilcox High-San Jose on Tuesday night, clawed their way back into the game and only trailed by six (22-16) after one quarter.

Things got even tighter as the game progressed. The teams went into the half only one point apart and were all even at 50-50 going into the final eight minutes of action.

Ahead by a point late in the game, Watsonville junior Lamar Cowans was fouled driving to the basket. The forward sunk both timely free throws to put his team ahead by three points with just under 10 seconds to go in the game.

A last ditch Gunn 3-point try was off target, giving Watsonville its second playoff victory of the week.

Cowans scored nine points in the win. Senior guard Austin Vojvoda had 13 points for the ‘Catz.

Next up for Watsonville is No. 1 seed Piedmont Hills. The Saturday afternoon quarterfinal affair is scheduled to tip-off at 4:30 pm. The game is at Piedmont Hills in San Jose and is one of four quarterfinal games to be played at the school on Saturday.

Gunn finishes the year with a 15-10 record overall.

The Titans finished with a 7-5 record in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division.
