BOYS BASKETBALL: Watsonville Falls to No. 1 seed Piedmont Hills in CCS Playoffs

Wildcatz succumb to fast-paced Pirates in quarterfinal matchup Saturday night.

Piedmont Hills 54, Watsonville 34

The Star: Piedmont Hills senior point guard Stephen Anderson scored a game-high 16 points, orchestrating the hosts’ fast break in a convincing Central Coast Section Division I Boys Basketball Playoff win Saturday night at Piedmont Hills High in San Jose.

The Turning Point: After a first quarter where both teams combined to scored 16 points—Piedmont led 10-6 after the first—the game opened up in the second. The change spelled big trouble for the underdog Wildcatz. Piedmont Hills outscored Watsonville 27-6 in the quarter, exploding to take a 37-12 advantage into the halftime break.

The Quote: “They just picked up the tempo and we had trouble rotating,” Watsonville junior Ivo Basor said about the shift that occurred from the first to the second quarter of play. “We played to their pace in the second quarter.”

Basor and the ‘Catz upended Gunn High on Thursday night, the second of two playoff wins this week for the team.

“It’s been a blast,” Basor said about the ride to get all the way to the CCS quarterfinals. “It’s probably been one of the greatest experiences of my life. The Gunn win ranks really up there. We’re such a close team. I’m glad I got to be a part of this.”

What's Next? Watsonville finishes the season with a 23-6 record overall. A remarkable turnaround from a 6-20 season the year before.

Piedmont Hills will play Santa Teresa High on Wednesday night at Independence High in San Jose.

Bottom Line: Watsonville big man Ivo Basor scored 30-plus points in a win over Gunn Thursday night. Two days later, the big man saw his usual amount of double and triple teams, but the 6-foot-8 post performer didn’t get as many touches as usual in the early going. Long jump shots didn’t connect, leading towards a low scoring quarter and eventual trouble for the upset-minded ‘Catz. In the second quarter, with Basor still not getting the ball inside on offense, the Pirates ramped up the pace not allowing their opponents defense to get set. The change in approach won the home team the game.
