The Literacy Program of the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County is expanding its free tutoring services in Watsonville.  The program provides free instruction in speaking, reading and writing English to residents of Santa Cruz County.  It also offers small classes and one-on-one preparation for the GED tests.

Genie Dee, Program Director, comments, "We need more volunteers in order to meet the demand for literacy education.  We are actively recruiting residents of Watsonville and nearby communities to attend our free Prospective Tutor Orientations to learn more about becoming volunteer tutors.  It takes only two hours a week."

No foreign language or teaching experience is required. Two one-hour orientations are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 6 pm and also Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 am. Both of these orientations will be held at the Volunteer Center office at 12 Carr St. in Watsonville. After the orientation, new tutors will then attend a training session the last two weeks of September.
