Doug was a great colleague and I am deeply saddened by his passing. We met occasionally typicallyRead More at conferences and we would sometimes have a chance to enjoy dinner and conversation about issues in sex education research, particularly regarding adolescents. He was extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful and good-natured. He was a decent person; so it was always a pleasure to spend time with him. I will miss him dearly, as will many others.

I heard there were several "Team Steph" supporters running the Santa Cruz Half MarathonRead More last weekend. A reader shared this. It's quite touching: "While I watched my daughter run the Santa Cruz 1/2 Marathon yesterday, I noticed many "Team Steph" shirts and even tattoos. I had never heard of "Team Steph" before and researched it today. I was sorry to read she lost her battle with cancer but I was impressed that so many were running and carrying on her memory."

Franchise Tax Board (FTB) of California is not an exception. Many states have a long list ofRead More delinquent taxpayers. I would not say that enforced collection procedure of FTB is somewhat different from all other states. It is just a matter of time, but all liable taxpayers go through the same process: liens, bank levies, seizure of property, wage garnishment, etc. There are ways to avoid these problems. It is possible to discuss a manageable repayment plan with FTB. If your debt is less than $10,000, you might actually save some money by doing it yourself. However, taxpayers that have higher liabilities might benefit by hiring a tax resolution company. Here are some examples of what can be done to settle your tax debt with the state of California: http://www.2020taxdebthelp.com/tax-resolution-state-CA.php.

In general the caliber of key speeches for the Democrats was significantly better that theRead More Republicans and covered different angles about the president. Michelle spoke about the person, the father, the husband where they came from; Clinton attacked the claims of the Romney campaign very effectively; Obama addressed his accomplishments and going forward. The Republicans talked about bashing Obama and clearly followed the Tea Party’s line. But I agree that the two conventions have changed few minds, perhaps 1-2%. It will be the upcoming debates that will most likely have the greatest impact. I would like to hear more said about policy differences than bashing one another. I still do not understand why the Republicans have such disdain towards Obama. Is it because he is black? I still hear people questioning his birth place. Or is it his strange Arab sounding name? Had he been white would they still have hated him so much? I also don’t understand why Republicans can ignore the need for Romney to release the last few years of his tax returns, or let him get away with not being specific as to how he will change taxes especially since taxes are one of his main campaign issues. Is he hiding something? Does he even have a tax reform strategy other than to lower taxes for the wealthy? His vagueness about his taxes and tax strategy should be something everyone should want to know.

If you really knew billy, you knew that he didn't stay at the salvation army, but he stayed in hisRead More car, which was parked at the salvation army. he didn't want to sleep in the shelter, but still used the shelter showers and bathroom --when he wasn't peeing out of his car door. He had to move his car when the shelter closed. and didn't want to stay at the rescue mission shelter either, so even with salvation army closing its shelter, they didn't kill him -- he was already sick! besides, the slavation army didn't stop feeding him every day after the shelter closed. Seriously? What's the difference of him dying in his car on second street and dying in his car at slavaton army?? It makes me mad that so many people are blaming the salvation army for this guys death, but NO one is asking the city to come forward and tell us why after so many years, they STILL don't have a plan in place to address the homeless issue that has existed for years!!! 20+ years!!!!! before the earthquake, before salvation army opened that stupid shelter. people should take this as a wake-up call. Not everyone that is homeless is jobless! people are living at shelters long term (what's an emergency shelter anyway?) that are making an income, but are consuming resources for those who really are job-less with no where to go. cut the crap and twisted politics! the city needs to come together and figure this out!!! PS: Who is moderating these posts that allows phrases like F#&K to exist???

What for the presence of Dr. Jerry Hanson on a Santa Fe vacation with the Weimers some thirty yearsRead More ago, we'd have attended Leigh's services back then. Seems that the cocktail onion in his gibson got the best of him and it was only Jerry's quick and expert application of the Heimlich Maneuver (causing the onion to pop out very unceremoniously) that Leigh was able to continue on for several more decades. Very sad that we will never be able to share cocktails again with a most delightful friend. Peter S. Carter 45 Broadway
