Deputies Break Up Cockfight

About 150 roosters were seized in bust in north Monterey County.

Deputies found 16 dead birds and 150 fighting roosters when they raided a cockfight at a home south of Watsonville on Sunday night, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office reported.

Eight people were cited at the fight, including the homeowner, Francisco Tapia, 41, who was ticketed for allegedly allowing a cockfight, authorities said. The charges all are misdemeanors.

Deputies were sent to the home, at 17C Maher Rd. in Royal Oaks, around 10:30 p.m. after getting reports of a possible cockfight. People fled when deputies arrived, but seven were cited for being spectators at a cockfight and resisting arrest, according to the sheriff's office.
